road trip round two

17/06/2012 § 5 Comments

Two weekends ago I went on another road trip with Andrew, Leah, Robert and Eric. Our plan was to spend a night in Brussels and a night in Köln. It was lots of fun! These pictures were taken at/on our way to our first stop, the ‘Moses Bridge’ at Fort de Roovere in the south of the Netherlands. It was a pretty cool piece of design.

My graduation presentation is in 2 [!!] weeks. I’ll try to post some more photos from the trip before then. Next stop, Brussels!

winter road trip

A couple weekends ago, me and a few friends rented a couple of cars and decided to drive through the Netherlands and Belgium to Luxembourg and Germany. It had snowed the day before but luckily the roads were clear and it made for some spectacular scenery while we were driving. The first photo was taken on the train on the way to pick up our car.. it looked like that outside for most of our drive through NL.  Our first stop was Maastricht in southern Holland. We didn’t spend too much time there but it seemed like a really interesting place.. I’ll have to go back sometime.

I signed up for a darkroom course at my school and we had our first class last night. I’m looking forward to getting more involved in the process of developing and making prints.. excited for next week already!

2011 [part II]

Second half of my “year in review.” I’m back in Delft now after a pretty brutal day of flying, delays, turbulence and multiple landing attempts. Glad to be on the ground for a while. I love to travel but flying is not my favourite… was just reminded of that fact yesterday.

[1] made it back to Vancouver and spent a day downtown with my mom and sister [2] nothing beats driving on the Sea to Sky Highway after a great weekend camping [3] did a West Coast road trip with my family and stopped at Deception Pass [4] we spent a few days at Cannon Beach in Oregon, watching the fog roll in and out [5] and exploring the beach a bit [6] then it was off to Portland.. it was great, and pretty close to Vancouver.. will have to visit more often [7] my mom and I made a trip to Salt on my last full day in Vancouver [8] my sister came back to NL with me and we made a trip to London [9] back in NL we spent a day biking in the Hoge Veluwe Park and it was stunning [10] tired of lame/overpriced sushi in Delft we made our own [11] I went to Hong Kong with my studio and it was a sensory overload.. loved it! [12] on our last day we went to Tai O, a fishing village, which was an amazing contrast to the city.

Will share more photos from Tai O soon.. they turned out to be some of my favourite from the trip. Hope everyone is enjoying 2012 so far.

Looking back, I did a lot of things in 2011 and I think it was a pretty great year overall. I tried to find some photos that may not have made their way onto here yet to sum up the year.

[1] went to the beach on a cold and sunny January afternoon [2] early morning sky on a studio site visit in February [3+4] friends and food, sometime in early February [5] went to a small town in Niedersachsen, Germany [6] and visited an old house [7] made my first ever trip to London and toured the AA building [8] went for a yummy lunch at Koya in London [9] got to explore a cool old building [twice] for my building conservation course [10] spring came to NL and it was sunny and warm [11] experienced my first Queen’s Day [12] went to Berlin! it was one of the best trips and one of the last things I did before finishing up school and coming back to Vancouver for the summer…

More 2011 memories to follow. Happy 2012!

hoge veluwe [part 2]

A few more photos from the Hoge Veluwe [just leaned how to pronounce it properly]. While we were biking we came across this weird clearing with a bunch of bright green moss and deer hoof prints in it. The whole time we were there I was hoping to spot some deer.. but unfortunately not this time…the tracks were as close as we got.

It was 24 [!!] degrees here yesterday and today feels about the same. I went to dim sum in Rotterdam with Erica, Robert and Eric for lunch and now we are all sufficiently stuffed. Now I’m thinking I should get out and enjoy the weather a bit more before tackling homework and reading.. better enjoy it while it lasts!

I brought my Voigtländer with me when I went to the Hoge Veluwe National Park a couple weeks ago with Erica, Cem and my sister. It had been a while since I’d used it and I’m really glad I finally brought it out again.

The park was amazing. Can you believe that all these were taken in the same place? So many interesting landscapes.. and they have a really large art and sculpture museum [which we didn't get around to seeing.. this time]. There are white bicycles you can use for free in the park and we definitely made use of them.. I think we cycled about 30km that day. Although it’s kind of a pain to get to without a car, we thought it was definitely worth it!

I was re-orgnaizing my photo folders and came across a bunch more black and white photos I took in the fall. After all the bright orange witnessed on Queen’s Day yesterday, a more monochrome post seemed appropriate.

I ended up having quite a nice day even though I didn’t go to any of the party epicentres. Delft was super busy with markets and stands set up all around town and there were live performances and lots of music and beer. I met up with my friends that decided to stay around here and we wandered through the markets, hung out with some puppies, got “american hotdogs”, relaxed with some drinks at the Doelenplein, and had a delicious and fun evening BBQ at our friend Robert’s place. I think it was a pretty awesome day, but next year I’m for sure checking out Amsterdam!

Strangely, three of my photos from my trip to the beach last month are kind of half double exposed. I actually think it looks kind of cool so I thought I’d post them all together. I was going to post more Germany photos but I’ll save that for tomorrow perhaps.

I got back from London a little under an hour ago and although I’m a bit exhausted I have to say it was one of the best trips I’ve been on. It’s such an amazing city… I took a ton of photos [both film and digital] and I’ll be sharing them soon. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Further East from the pier at Scheveningen there are a bunch of old bunkers from WWII in the dunes. They were fenced off but easy enough to get to if you really want. I’m kind of fascinated by old abandoned structures which is why I am super excited about my current studio project.

Speaking of which I had a totally draining 9 hours [gasp] of studio today. It’s not normally supposed to be that long but we had a guest who insisted on asking each of us about our project which took way too long. Although, my brain is overflowing with ideas for the site which is kind of exciting [compared to last semester].

I have some reading to do and diagrams to make tonight so I should get to it. I’m going on a mysterious adventure to Germany for 3 days on Friday.. should be interesting. I’ll take pictures and post more about it next week. Better get back to work!

the pier

The pier at Sheveningen is totally bizarre. It looks like some kind of alien spacecraft that plunked itself down on the beach. Also, there is a weird bungy jumping tower that does not look very safe [at all], a Dutch pancake restaurant and even a sex shop in the pier’s main promenade. It’s all pretty strange but at least there are great views of the rest of the beach from up there.

I didn’t get as much work done as I wanted to this weekend but I did manage to watch a hilariously horrible movie on Friday, help make a yummy dinner for friends last night and went to Rotterdam for some conveyor belt sushi today. It was a pretty fun weekend but I guess that means I have to work extra hard this week… we’ll see how that goes. Hope everyone had a fun weekend too!
